Murano Glass on the Path to IGP – Process Launched for European Recognition

We are pleased to announce the start of the procedure for submitting the official application to register Murano Glass as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI/IGP) for artisanal and industrial products, pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2023/2411.

The initiative, promoted by the Consorzio Promovetro di Murano together with Confartigianato and the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, represents the first step toward a decisive milestone for the island’s future: the formal and legally binding recognition of the cultural, productive, and historical value of Murano glassmaking. Products manufactured outside the island of Murano will not be entitled to this protection nor be defined as artistic Murano glass.

European protection defines and legitimizes Murano Glass as authentic industrial and intellectual property, providing an essential tool against imitations, counterfeiting, and improper use of a name that embodies a centuries-old tradition.

Once the registration process is completed, the “Murano Glass IGP” mark will unequivocally guarantee consumers that products bearing this designation genuinely originate from the island and comply with technical production standards, craftsmanship quality, and the authentic territorial origin of an art passed down in Murano from 1291 to the present day.
